Happy New Year!

With Sun and Venus in Capricorn, it's about money and personal spending. However, as Mercury is also in the sign of the Goat reversed, there'll be confusion over fiscal dealings or talk, problems with expenses or the budget and even the odd feisty word over the dollar. Most of it is minor, but you'll get a better start to 2010 by making it simple, painstaking and as well co-ordinated as you can. Avoid the Centaur's traditional allegro and stick to adagio.

With Mars also in reverse, delays with travel or study, frustration with a plan or difficulty with overseas links or contacts are in the wind. Once again, moderate pace will be the choice. You can float in and let things take care of themselves until freedom of movement returns to the engines of the Universe.

It's feisty first up and Jan 11 will see an important meeting or occasion where money is the featured topic. If you have special projects or activities on the calendar, there'll be a delay or a natural hiatus as Saturn turns retrograde in Libra on Jan 13. Mercury in reverse squares off the measurer of effort, bringing question marks over money and a break or disagreement with friends. It's emotional, but it'll pass.

Jan 15 sees Mercury move forward under the auspices of the New Moon and Solar Eclipse in Capricorn. Shed the dead wood, rationalise the expenses and get the bills up to date. After that, put efficient fiscal practices in place. There's a boost or a lift in mood on the home front as Jupiter slips into Pisces on Jan 18. You'll have improvements with the domicile, visitors from overseas and people of status or from other cultures on the guest list. You'll be busy out in the world as well, for Venus rolls into Aquarius the same day, bringing dealings with the public, the mix of business and pleasure or a brief round of the Centaur as 'Agony Aunt', listening instead of talking.

Jan 20 will see you in the thick of communication as the Sun hits Aquarius. There's spiky stuff over money and tension in 'day to day' meet and greet. Avoid traffic fines and meals on the run. Stay focused on the people and activities that can boost your financial standing or holdings.

Dollar Dealings

Get out the bills and get them organised with Mercury in reverse in Capricorn. You'll have missed something or miscalculated with the budget, but a keen eye will rectify. Make sure everybody knows what they can and cannot spend, including you! The hitches and glitches will sort themselves after Jan 15 when Mercury moves forward. Pace yourself, pick up the missed items, and keep a clean and efficient balance sheet from there. Getting It Straight

Social dealings or romantic life will be bound up in the budget at first with Venus in Capricorn. Balance the demands of hospitality or entertainment against the realities of the budget and work for a clean sheet. You'll deal with minor financial people or matters of spending and accounts. There's a lift of mood and activity on Jan 18, as Venus slips into Aquarius. You'll be out and about, wheeling and dealing, keeping day to day business going. For some, there'll be dealings with the public. If you're tempted to overspend on Jan 27, resist the urge. There'll be tension on social life, or a 'flash in the pan' romantic interest. Err on the side of caution.

Watching the Horizon

Mars is in reverse in Leo for the month and will not move forward until Mar 10. It's time to step back and review your plans for travel, your need to study, or your sense of the big picture. Is the spiral of your activities broad enough? Do you draw enough stimulus from the circle of your connections? You might need to up the ante with exercise in the outdoors or change the diet to something less exotic, but really, this is about how you get to the next horizon.
