Astrologer Ian Thurnwald examines Bill Clinton's solar return chart in the light of scandal brought on by current eclipses and retrograde planets.

THE CLINTON AFFAIRpart three

The Effect on Bill's Personal Life

With the intangible and desultory energy of Neptune in the 1st house of the self, Clinton's self-image and the impression he makes on others will change. He may come to the realisation that the impression he makes on others is not a clear reflection of his own inner self.

Clinton may also realise that his actions have been based on an idealistic, rather than a realistic, assessment of situations; that he has acted on the basis of how he wants things to be, rather than as things really are. More negatively, the President faces confusion, demoralisation, and possible humiliation at the hands of others (on the other hand, he may be responsible for confusing and deluding others - which will create difficulties in his relations with them). The upside of Neptune here is that Bill Clinton may be seen as a more compassionate and caring person.

With both the dynamic, action-oriented Mars and the emotional, sensitive Moon in the 7th house of close partnerships, Clinton will be dealing with others who bring their grievances against him into the open. He will face legal conflicts and conflicts in his close and intimate relationships. The self-assertive energies of Mars make it difficult for him to compromise and achieve proper cooperation with close associates. He will have to compromise to avoid needless controversy. The Moon here indicates intense confrontations with women, which reveal hidden features of his relationships, or unconscious aspects of his inner self. Clinton will find it difficult to remain detached and objective in his conflicts with others and may find himself reacting automatically without proper forethought. He is likely to display more emotion in all his personal associations and in his dealings with the public.

With Saturn (the reality principle) in the 3rd house of immediate environment, routine thought and communication, Clinton will face situations that demand he understand and take control of the previously taken-for-granted foundations of his everyday world, his unconscious mental patterns, attitudes, habits, styles of speaking and ways of listening to others. The realisation that he needs to make extensive changes in these areas, the awareness that his notions of what he should be do not reflect how he actually is, will discourage and depress the man. For a time he will be withdrawn and unable to communicate as readily as he used to. Because of this he will encounter troubles with people in his immediate environment.

Aspects link together the distinct and sometimes conflicting energies of two, or more, planets. The type of aspect describes the ease or difficulty of the interchange of energies between the linked planets. Three distinct but interrelated themes emerge from the difficult planetary aspects of Clinton's t-square.

Clinton's personal relationships and his emotional state.

Clinton faces a year when all his relationships and partnerships will be severely tested (Sat/Asc). His relationships with women will be especially difficult (Sat/Moon). Events that highlight a conflict between his work and his personal life (Sat/Moon) will force him to re-evaluate all his close associations and alliances with others, bringing an end to those that are inappropriate, and making him realise which relationships are really important him (Sat/Asc).

However, while his own emotional sensitivity will be heightened, his personal feelings and intuitions may be inaccurate. His perception of reality may be over-idealised - clouded by seeing things as he wants them to be, rather than as they actually are. He may see himself as unfairly criticised or victimised by others and act accordingly. Such an unclear, self-deceptive, approach will lead to disappointments. (Nep/Moon)

And, as his thinking lacks clarity and objectivity he will not fare too well in delicate negotiations or discussions. He will, however, realise that he relies on the women in his life for nurturing and support. (Moon/Asc)

In relation to the problems in his personal and domestic life, it is likely that the recollection of past actions will show him to be guilty of not living up to his own, and society's, expectations. He will need to restore balance between his need to be himself and do what he must (his work), and the need to maintain his marriage and get much needed emotional support from his loved-ones (his domestic responsibilities). (Sat/Moon)

Clinton's response to the conflicts he faces.

He will suffer setbacks and restrictions in his work and social life due to intense ego conflicts with others who oppose him. (Sat/Mars) He will encounter stiff opposition from open enemies, especially in any legal conflicts he becomes embroiled in. (Mars/Asc)

These opponents seek to defeat him either because they feel threatened by his ambitions, or because they are intrinsically opposed to his goals. (Sat/Mars) However, Clinton is inclined to come out fighting, feeling confident of his ability to stand up for himself (Mars/Moon).

But, having to deal with these opponents will effectively block all other efforts to assert himself and pursue his goals. He will be angered by, and want to break free from, these frustrating and irritating restrictions. (Sat/Mars) Moreover, he will be egotistical and aggressive in any direct confrontations with others (Mars/Asc), indeed, he will be very bitter and antagonistic toward his opponents. Despite his best efforts to conceal his anger, the seething rage he feels will be apparent to all. (Sat/Mars)

Because of this dilemma between having to hold back and wanting to assert himself, he needs to adopt a cautious, thorough and careful approach to all tasks. Anything done carelessly and in haste is likely to fail. (Sat/Mars)

Clinton faces up to himself and his past actions.

His encounters with authority figures will be discouraging because they bring to light his own worst suspicions about himself. He needs to confront and deal with these aspects of his character (an inability to show adequate contrition?) before he can move forward with any grand plans. (Sat/Mars)

However, the stress he is under will sap him of his vigour and energy. He may seem out-of-sorts or depressed, or he may even succumb to infection and fall ill. He will feel discouraged in having to deal with others who may be less than truthful, or who are trying to promulgate some deception about him. (Nep/Mar)

And, although he would rather avoid having to do so, events will also force him to face the consequences of dubious past actions. If he admits to deceiving and misleading close partners and associates in the past, they will react with anger and mistrust. This double-edged, self-inflicted defeat is likely to prompt much soul-searching on his part. (Nep/Mar)

Again, when the reality of his situation is brought home to him he will realise that he has not lived up to his own, and society's, ideals. He will be disappointed with himself and may question his ability to attain his goals and ambitions, and whether he is worthy of attaining them. (Sat/Nep) He'll need to eat humble pie, face up to his past actions, and take whatever action is necessary to mend the damage done. (Nep/Mar)

Plans and schemes that are underhand or based on self-interest alone will fail. However, he will succeed when he acts to serve the interests of other people. (Nep/Mar)

Protestors having their say about Bill...

Some Personal Affects...

Bill Clinton's precessed solar return chart has a t-square between Neptune/Ascendant, Moon/Mars, and Saturn. This configuration links the 1st house, the 7th house, and the 3rd house respectively. The focal point of the t-square is Saturn in the 3rd house. A t-square is a very tense aspect pattern, but also a very dynamic one because it induces action to relieve the tension inherent within it. In a solar return chart the t-square indicates that a person will experience great inner tensions, and will encounter stressful events and challenging situations that just have to be dealt with.

The house locations of the planets in the solar return give a general indication of the the areas of life that are affected by their energies..
