The Festival of Salvation [part two]
Malvin Artley continues his examination of the meanings inherent in the current Full Moon in Virgo, in the light of personal transformation through the power of Pluto, the esoteric ruler of Pisces. Malvin also publishes a regular astrological newsletter, to which you can subscribe by clicking the link at the end of this article.
Pluto has been very much in prominence in world affairs over the past few years. It governs the process of psychic clearing and restitution, of major endings and separations, the clarification of the mind and emotions (what the esotericist would term “kama-manas”) and of bringing to the surface all that is hidden and all that needs to be resolved, especially in the lower nature. In this full moon figure we find Pluto at the apex of a T-square configuration with the Sun/Moon axis as the arms of the cross. Furthermore, Jupiter conjoins the Moon in that figure and Mars sextiles the Sun/Mercury conjunction. In all, this promises to be quite a potent and liberating full moon period. Pluto at the apex of a T-square is said to indicate powerful, all-consuming obsessions, an intense psychic nature, a powerful drive to bring things to the surface and for transparency, and an ability to probe deeply into the inner workings of the psyche. It is not an easy placement, and the intensity of it can be most disconcerting to those who wish for things to remain hidden or who seek to keep the status quo in life. Pluto is inimical to the status quo and urges us ever-onwards toward personal and social transformation. And, in fact, the sign Pisces does this very thing as well, which really comes as no surprise since Pluto rules it. Pisces rules the depths of one’s nature—the stormy sea or the tranquil ocean of life. It is the natural 12th House of the Zodiac which rules, among other things: karmic liabilities, personal downfall, civic organizations, intrigue, obsessions, occultism, public welfare, psychism, welfare as an institution, secret societies, assassinations, the secret service, oil and oil wells, secret enemies of a nation, conspiracies, fears, criminals, private life, nunneries and monasteries, meditation, scandal, the sea, salvation and elephants (for good measure). Pisces rules these things as well along with the fluids of the body and the lymphatic system, North Africa, actors and sleep, to name but a few. We can begin to see the general undertone of what we are looking at here. We can also see from this how there would be such a fertile and wide scope of influence for this full moon period and for the general tone of planetary salvage work for the entire year, for each full moon period marks a general tone of some type of endeavor throughout the year. It will be of great interest to see what takes place in the political arena this year, especially given the preceding rulerships and the fact that mutable (common) signs are involved, since we know that the governments of the world and the intelligence-gathering agencies have been a bit less than forthcoming with the public, to understate the situation. Add to the above the fact that there are elections this year in all three countries of the “Axis of the Willing” in the recent Iraq War, that both of the apparent candidates in the US presidential election (though it has not been fully decided yet) are members of the same secret society (Skull and Bones Club) [Pisces also rules internment and skeletons—especially ones in the closet. The symbolism is just amazing.], then we have the makings of what promises to be a most unusual, exciting and entertaining year in the political landscape of the world. Expect the unexpected, and for those who like a good scandal, this year should be a veritable feast in that regard. Pisces is said to transmit The Light of the World, meaning that it reveals the Light of Life itself and ends forever the darkness of materialism. This is not to say that all materialism will end this year, but anytime there is a Piscean impulse, as there will be at this full moon, yet another chunk is taken away from the “stone that seals the tomb” and thus allows us all a little more freedom to live more spiritually rather than being bound to the cross of materialism. Every turn of Pisces on the wheel brings some sort of salvation to a waiting and struggling humanity. Pluto is a fascinating little planet. Being a little chunk of ice in the far reaches of our solar system, one would not think it would exert much of an influence in our lives. But, it lies out there, hidden from view, representing all that is frozen and stuck within each of us. It is the lower octave of Mars in the zodiacal system, meaning that it works on the line of the Destroyer, but it is not as far advanced as Mars from an evolutionary perspective. It works in concert with and under the impulse of Mars, hence its often upsetting influence. Pluto was said to be the Regent of Hades. The vast majority of people in the Western world have a rather stilted notion of what Hades (Hell) is supposed to be, thinking it to be a netherworld where the damned are meant to suffer in eternity for their sins. On closer examination, though, we find a different story. Hades simply means “sightless” or “unseen”. Pluto was said to be the god of wealth, crops and riches. He was the son of Saturn and Rhea (Mother to the Gods), and the brother of Zeus and Poseidon in the Greek myths. Pluto was described as a grim and pitiless god, unappeased by prayer and sacrifice, which fits very well with how people tend to experience aspects and transits of Pluto. He was said to rule wealth, though, because he knew where all the hidden wealth of the world was buried. He governed crops because the seeds lay buried underground until they sprouted. The Great HealerSo, anything that was buried or hidden away came under the dominion of Pluto. Hades was also known as Polydegmon—receiver of many guests. Hades in this regard was seen more as a place of purging rather than eternal punishment, since all souls who entered eventually were released into the Elysian Fields (the heaven worlds or Devachan) after due payment for evils committed during life on Earth had been paid. Death through Pluto is transformation, not damnation. Death through Pluto is to be born into life anew. When the Sun ingressed into Pisces last weekend and the astral plane was stirred we saw the action of Pluto via Pisces as it began this process of clarification and purging. For, unless we remove the obstacles to our own growth, we have no real hope of removing obstacles for others beyond a certain point. There was a storm in the sea of human emotions at that time as Pluto and Uranus moved upon the face of the waters. The degree of Pluto in this figure is of interest and reads thus:
The “new country” is that for which we are all being prepared—the New Age, the era of spiritual self-responsibility, the coming of the profound changes to happen upon our little globe and the shifts within our own individual energy fields that will inevitably and conclusively change our perceptions of things and our ways of living. We are entering into a new way of perceiving and of responding to spiritual purpose. Gone are the days of handing over one’s life and authority to someone else. This self-responsibility will happen in every area of life—personal, financial, health, relationship, religious, political, etc. There are very many old Souls on the Earth at the moment and many more to come. The tide of the past Piscean Age is turning quickly and we all must be able to adapt and move with it. We are all like immigrants moving into a strange new land. Some go with a fearful attitude and live out their lives anonymously, just doing what they have to do to survive. Then there are those who see the possibilities of the new life and who excitedly and passionately follow their dreams for a better and more fulfilling life. I moved to a new country 10 years ago, so I can speak from experience on this point—life is literally what you make it. Better to live to one’s highest vision and to drink deeply of the cup that has been offered than to waste one’s life in fear and doubt, never to realize what has been offered. As I enter into this New Age with you, my fellow immigrants, I offer to share my cup in fellowship and a sense of joyous adventure as we travel this road together. These are exciting, pregnant and precipitous times that offer a wealth of opportunity in so many ways. In the third part of this article Malvin explores the fulfillment of soul's purpose and the idea of self realization. Read part three of The Festival of Salvation ![]() |
