Malvin is the author of Bodies of Fire: An Exploration of the Lesser Chakra System. He has authored numerous articles and was a member of the faculty of the University of the Seven Rays, a non-profit organization dedicated to the teaching of the Trans-Himalayan tradition as expressed through the books of Alice Bailey, Helena Blavatsky and others.
His primary focus over the past 25 years has been on the sciences as they express occultism and with bridging work between the two. His special interests are the human subtle energy system and all the chakras, or energy centres, physics and technology, astronomy and all aspects of Chinese occultism. He has done extensive work with Chinese astrology and the cycles they use and seeks to synthesize the great Western and Oriental systems on such matters.

    White-capped Waves...
Clipper Under SailSubtle Meanings of the New Moon in Sagittarius

Malvin Artley looks at the meanings inherent in the current New Moon in Sagittarius. This powerful New Moon is also a Solar Eclipse, completing the cycle began with the Lunar Eclipse two weeks before. Malvin also publishes a regular astrological newsletter, to which you can subscribe by clicking the link at the end of this article.

The days following the Scorpio eclipse have been bringing their due rewards and enlightenment, as well as a general feeling of lassitude due to the intensive clearing the Scorpio phase has brought about--as it inevitably does. This feeling as though we have all been having to walk through molasses since that first eclipse has been fairly universal in its reporting but, as well, people have been conveying a general increase of or change in perceptions as things have filtered through from inner levels. This was all to be expected and welcomed. Although this letter is supposed to be about the Sagittarius full moon, the bulk of it will be taken up with a consideration of the events leading up to it, with the full moon eventually rounding the piece out.

    Solar Eclipse

Following upon the Scorpio full moon we had another eclipse at the new moon of Sagittarius, which occurred at 10:00 AM AEDT on the 24th of November. The Sun and Moon were conjunct on the 2nd degree of Sagittarius, the symbol of which reads thus:

"White-capped waves display the power of wind over sea."

As was stated in the Scorpio eclipse letters, this second eclipse has served to distribute the energies brought about by the first one and to bring about the manifestation of needed clarity and change in people's lives. The reasons for that will be put forward shortly.

The symbol just quoted is of interest and import, for it goes to the heart of what has happened since this second eclipse. Wind (or air, more specifically) is often seen as being analogous with the intuition in esoteric traditions, as well as with certain aspects of mind. In this case we have the analogy of the intuition moving upon the face of the waters, which is most often associated with the astral plane and the emotions, and of moving the emotions in the direction of the blowing wind. But, we know that in order to properly register intuitive insights, the astral nature needs to be calm and not in constant motion, like the waves.

The Astral Nature and the Reasoning Mind
What the reasoning mind often perceives in terms of intuitions tends to get distorted, especially if those insights do not somehow agree with the model of things the mind has constructed. There is often upset in the mind as a result. The goal before anyone seeking to render the astral body a good reflector of wisdom is to still the mind, so that the vast sea of that wisdom is accessible instead of a danger. For very many people since this second eclipse, the sea of emotional life has been unsettled at best, and often stormy in some cases. Many relationships have been almost cast upon the rocks and shattered. But, there is something afoot in all this, and it involves the planet Uranus, a planet I have not discussed at any length until now.

Solar Eclipse by Jean-Paul AvisseIn the Nov. 24th eclipse, there was a loose stellium (collection) of planets in Sagittarius - the Sun, Moon Mercury, Venus and Pluto. Of these, the Sun and Moon were square to Uranus, while Pluto and Mercury were at the apex of a T-square involving a Mars/Jupiter opposition. The T-square points to the turbulent nature of communications between people over the last week or so, especially with Mercury conjoined to Pluto at the apex, both squaring Mars. Jupiter has done its bit to ensure that such communications were rendered in fullness - no half-measures here. But, as with any new or full moon figure, the primary point of emphasis is on the Sun, Moon and any aspects to those two bodies.

The square of the Sun and Moon to Uranus in the eclipse of the 24th brings us to a brief consideration of Uranus and its importance in any horoscope. In orthodox astrological literature, Uranus rules the unexpected, the strange and bizarre, sudden change, originality, upsets, shocks and upheavals, electricity and engineering, wizards, rebellion, prototypes and prodigies, occultism and astrology, nerves, hurricanes and strong winds, broadcasts, bachelors, magicians and magic - among other things. It also confers the ability to work alone and to bring new things into form. Esoterically considered, Uranus is called the "School of Magic of the 10th Order", or sometimes, "The planet of Violet Force" [Please note that this is not violent force, although it may seem that way sometimes.]. Its graduates are said to wield the force of cosmic etheric prana. It is said to be the primary expression in this solar system of the Will of God, or what might be called "Fire Electric", and it carries and expresses the energy of Ceremonial Magic, or Order. Of the planets, it is "God, the Father". It is one of the synthesizing planets of our solar system--i.e., it is one of three planets to which all life in this solar system eventually passes prior to passing out of this system altogether, the other two being Saturn and Neptune.

    The Action of Uranus

Above and beyond all the preceding, though, the action of Uranus could perhaps be best defined as that energy that brings about better conditions, simply put. This last statement would seem to fly in the face somewhat of the more orthodox interpretations of calamity, disaster and the like to which Uranus is usually ascribed. chakraBut, we need to keep in mind that the term "better conditions" refers not to personal circumstance but, rather, to conditions which are more conducive to the work of one's higher Self. If the personal conditions coincide with that expression, great! If not, then I guess we all know what can happen. Disasters and upheaval are only so from our limited perception as human beings. In fact, we are told by the Great Ones not to be afraid of emotional devastation and the like, because it often precedes and presages the coming in of higher energies and faculties, with the devastation being the invariable process of clearing away that must take place before any new order can be properly established. Change does not have to mean devastation, but it sometimes brings it if we are too attached to things.

As such, then, Uranus has rulership over all that we have yet to attain as personas in the realm of mind, desire and body - Soul and Spirit, in other words. Unless we can register somewhat the action of the Soul in our own life, then, the only way we ever perceive Uranus is as a disastrous event or upheaval, unless we are moving in the Soul's timing and direction, in which case the action of Uranus is seen to be an unexpected benefit or windfall of some sort. This is perhaps a good barometer as to whether or not one is moving with the Soul's timing, if one is able to read how Uranus is working through one's chart.

The Magic of the Higher Self

The term "cosmic etheric prana" from the above enumerations about Uranus gives another vital clue as to how Uranus works and in what spheres. Esotericists know that the 7 planes of which we can be aware as humans are but the 7 subplanes of the cosmic physical plane. Our physical plane is what we might term a "lower octave" or a reflection of the cosmic physical plane in all its divisions. On the physical plane, whether cosmic or systemic, the ethers exist only on the highest 4 subplanes of that plane, which is why most people have no awareness of them. The only material subplanes most people know are the solid, liquid and gaseous states of material science. Etheric prana, or chi to the Eastern mind, circulates upon these 4 more rarified material planes. So, cosmic ether goes no lower than the plane of intuition, or Buddhi, if one is familiar with all the correspondences involved. This "cosmic etheric prana" is the very essence of the Soul and Spirit - the life-blood of spiritual existence. It is the force of the Soul and Spirit itself. It is what the higher Self wields when it seeks to make changes upon the more material worlds, and it is the force and tool of Magic in the truest sense of the word, for the only true magic is of the higher Self.
