2003. Chinese Year of the Water Goat![]() Last year was the year of the Water Horse and what a year! Next in the cycle of animals is the Sheep (or Goat). The Goat /Sheep in Chinese astrology is by nature a very kindly and dutiful animal. It's an animal that had a special place in the creation cycle, according to the Chinese story, as the Goat took the heavenly crops down to Earth on his discovery that the people on Earth were starving. When the Jade Emperor of Heaven discovered the Goat's theft he ordered him put to death. The next year a white goat appeared from heaven in exactly the same spot as the Jade Emperor had him executed, so the emperor was forced to acknowledge that the Goat was indeed a heavenly animal. The Goat/Sheep is a patient and cautious one in all aspects of life. Goats can bear great pressure and still remain stable. They can be very hard workers accomplishing much and can easily take on more than their load. They are not limelight hoggers but are more likely to stay in the background. Being good team workers they are very steadfast. Goats are charming and persuasive and will have a calming influence on all around them. The Goat makes a good peacemaker and is great at negotiations. They are also dreamers and sensitive people who may be sometimes off into their favourite dream escape. They are very sensitive to their environment and to other people and thus like to beautify their surroundings. The image of goats as stubborn is a common one - they cling to the side of hills refusing to tumble down, and nimbly leap from spot to spot. They are good at resolving everyone else's problems and poor at working on their own. With the combination of the two elements this year - Earth (the Goat) and Water element, which are in difficult aspect in the Chinese Five Element cycle of energies, there will be some carry on of issues from 2002 through to this year. The continuing rule of the Water element means deeper unresolved stuff will also carry through to 2003. The other side is that the Goat, with its ability to negotiate, can mean new solutions will be brought forward into the new year to try to resolve and enlighten situations that have come before. Because the Goat is an Earth element animal and is mixing with Water, we can expect that earth and environment issues will continue to be before us. The Water element this year is Yin Water which means water is weaker that in 2002. Problems with lack of water (droughts), earth movements, earthquakes and landslides will all be a feature in 2003. Mining is an Earth industry and will again be heavily effected. Other Earth industries like farming, food production, property, pottery, engineering, storage, warehousing and nurseries will all be in focus. Farming and agriculture may suffer some big changes with weather strongly affecting crops, but also there may be breakthroughs in food production techniques. I'm thinking here especially of the issue of Genetic Engineering in farming and food which may hit big lows in public popularity. Its public image may fall even further. The Earth element also rules fertility and birth so is not surprising that we are starting the year with the stories of cloning and the Raelian sect who have made claims that they have cloned a human baby and another is on the way. The issue of human cloning will be in the news all year as governments move to cut off the legal avenues for those who wish to clone people. Because farm animals are ruled by Earth element then the other aspect, the cloning of farm animals for food production and the growing of drugs or vaccines, which is already on the drawing boards, will be big news in 2003.
