    Jupiter Transits Pisces 2010
good fortune, healing emotions, spiritual growth

Every year, Jupiter, Lord of Fortune, moves from one sign to the next, setting the stage of human consciousness for the ensuing year. January 2010 sees the change from airy Aquarius to moist Pisces, the sign of his traditional rulership. Healing, personal growth and spiritual awareness is favoured by this transit, awakening a sensitive, even psychic atmosphere in the collective, especially at a political, financial and religious level (these are the areas mainly governed by Jupiter). Rob Tillett, one of the founders of Astrology on the Web, discusses the effects this new transit will have on the various signs of the zodiac.

On January 18th, 2010, Jupiter, the mighty lord of the ancient gods, moves from the intellectual sign Aquarius, the airy sign of the Water-Bearer, to a highly favoured position in Pisces, the Fishes, a water sign known for its emotional sensitivity and social charm. Whenever Jupiter changes signs, a new flavour is brought to the underlying experience of our lives, giving a subliminal boost to the matters governed by the sign and house concerned. Bear in mind that Jupiter in the heavens remains in each sign of the zodiac for approximately twelve months, taking twelve years to transit the entire zodiac. At the end of each of these cycles, related matters must progress to a new level, or else they will fall away into obscurity and eventual oblivion.

Jupiter's naturally expansive character is beautifully expressed in Pisces, Jupiter's night-sign. Jupiter in Pisces is charitable, sympathetic and hospitable, always keen to help those in need. This position is highly sensitive and artistic, but is subject to the influences of the desire world, often leading to religious experiences, psychic manifestations and premonitions. The hidden side of organised religion, secret societies, cults and mediumistic groups prosper under this year-long transit, minus a short stint in Aries. Meditation, contemplation and spiritual exercises can produce great benefits, but Jupiter here is often fond of mind-altering substances, especially alcohol, which can lead to dependency, addiction and obsessive behaviour. Jupiter in Pisces is optimistic, but secretive, tending to expand the influence and social standing of big institutions, hospitals, universities and the like; bureaucratic status-building, government departments, especially health care and support for the disadvantaged. They'll need it, given the disasters of the past two years!

Go to Top An Unusual Year

2010 is an unusual year in that, early in the year, Jupiter powers through Pisces in less than six months, crossing into fiery Aries on June 6 for a three-month visit lasting until September 9. At almost the same time (May 28, only hours after the Full Moon in Sagittarius) disruptive Uranus moves into Aries too, for a visit lasting until August 14. Aries is a Fire Sign, eager and ready to run!

The Aries Point, the first degree of Aries, is the beginning of the tropical zodiac, a very potent position. Jupiter thus forms a conjunction with Uranus at the Aries Point on June 6, showing that individual freedom and independence becomes an issue as the world veers down an entirely unexpected path. Group consciousness may overwhelm the individual, threatening personal freedom, for restrictive Saturn opposes this conjunction over the forecast period, as discussed later in the article.

This three-month phase gives us a foretaste of how the world will be during most of 2011, when Jupiter and Uranus swing back into Aries, after the period when their retrograde phases will return them both to Pisces for some months. We will see the development of new methods in law, science, philosophy and travel. Governments will seek to obtain more authority over people, which arouses the individualistic antagonism to control that will be characteristic of this period. Pioneering developments will bring remarkable progress and we will see the growth of a religious spirit, albeit along most unconventional lines. Governments and other authorities will have a tendency to spend money too freely—and impulsive, knee-jerk reactions to situations may cause loss in business ventures and personally in the esteem of friends and associates to those especially affected. Not paying attention to details or limitations can easily make us lose sight of reality, but humanity has the spirit and faith to make our dreams come true.

Since Uranus turns retrograde in this degree on July 5 and Jupiter heads back past it between the end of August and September 9, hitting the aspect again in the first week of January 2011, combined with the opposition of Saturn hovering around, this tense and unusual situation will be protracted to one degree or another.

Go to Top Jupiter is a Time Lord

The cycles of Jupiter, in coordination with the cycles of Saturn, the other "Great Chronocrator", or "Time Lord", direct the energies that have significant effects on the collective being. These are especially marked by the conjunctions between these two massive forces, but also by the sign changes, hard aspects and retrograde periods.

Time LordJupiter is a Time Lord

The cycles of astrology are reflected in our daily lives, as well as informing the patterns of our human creativity, whether artistic or musical, social, political or financial. The opposition between Jupiter and Saturn marks periods of deep stress, when the fabric of the cosmos is stretched and twisted by seemingly irreconcilable positions. It's progress versus tradition, in every sense of the word.

In 2010 we will have Jupiter opposing Saturn in mid-May (exact May 23), with Jupiter racing forward in Pisces and Saturn stalking backwards in Virgo. Pisces and Virgo are both Mutable Signs, so the initial effects on the collective will be less stressful than the opposition in mid-August in the Cardinal Signs, Aries and Libra. Nevertheless this aspect hovers over the latter part of the year (as it is restimulated again at the end of March 2011) reviving the tensions that developed over the past two years, up to late 2009, while Saturn was in Virgo before moving forward into Libra on October 29, 2009. Everyone is familiar with the financial, economic and political stresses of those days, which are still working themselves out. These will be revived and hopefully dealt with in ensuing weeks. Bad timing, past failures, authority figures, or simply a lack of generosity frustrate personal growth, economic prosperity, spiritual fulfillment, and intellectual endeavours during this period. We may be required to give back some of the prosperity or success we have gained, in order to help others get ahead. However, even if we and our governments are willing, we may simply lack the means to do so—at least for the time being. If most situations seem to flow smoothly in spite of this influence, it would nevertheless be foolish to take the status quo for granted, or further defy the odds by going out of our way to invite situations that could threaten us in these areas.

The influence is magnifed by the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction, showing that responsibilities, restrictions, rules and regulations will be in direct conflict with personal freedom of action and of association, thanks to the urge of authorities, legal, political and religious, to attain maximum control over their subjects. With the Moon's nodes marking a Cosmic Cardinal Cross with Saturn and Jupiter, this will be a key factor in blocking progress, happiness, success, or whatever else the people may seek. Authority is challenged, but circumventing the rules or trying to get around restrictions is unlikely to work. Valuable opportunities may be missed through inflexible attitudes. It is important to realize that you will probably not be able to remove the forces that oppose you, which only leaves you the option of finding a constructive way to work around them or with them.

The last conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn occurred in May/June 2000 at 23° Taurus, the Fixed Sign of the Bull, which marked a number of major developments (see Jupiter's transit of Scorpio 2005). Jupiter next enters Taurus on June 4, 2011, but Saturn is not in aspect until this point (at 23° Taurus) is reached on May 16, 2012, when Jupiter and Saturn are exactly inconjunct by quincunx, just as Venus turns retrograde at 23° Gemini. 2012 marks the end of the Mayan Calendar, so mark that point in your diary...

In the even more distant future, Jupiter at 20° Leo is just prevented from reactivating the Fixed Sign Grand Cross via a square to Saturn at 23° Scorpio by the end of October 2014, due to slowing to a retrograde period just before catching up to Saturn, which then accelerates away leaving Jupiter in a cloud of cosmic dust. The next major hard aspect between the Time Lords is the square from Jupiter in the 15th degree of Gemini to Saturn in the 15th degree of Pisces on Christmas Eve 2025. It's a long way off, so don't lose too much sleep over it, folks.

Go to Top Growth and Expansion

Jupiter rules our potential for growth and expansion on many levels: physical, intellectual, spiritual and cultural, along with the accumulation of material assets, power and status. He rules our optimism and aspirations, including our interests in faraway places, travel, foreigners, academic and artistic types, cultural endeavours such as publishing, higher education, structured personal development, healing, government and religion. Jupiter is a risk-taker, so also rules gambling and speculation, adventure – and moving into unknown territory.

Luck and wellbeing are primarily governed by Jupiter, known as the Greater Benefic (Venus is the Lesser Benefic). When well-aspected, the Thunder God brings superb opportunities for expansion and success. Poorly aspected, he generates over-confidence and foolhardy actions with little care for the consequences.

Here is a brief outline of the effects on each sign as Jupiter enters Pisces for a period of twelve months. Remember to check the forecast for your rising sign too, for a more balanced reading. To estimate your rising sign, click here.

Aries, the Ram Aries, the Ram Go to Top

Between January 18 and June 6, 2010, Jupiter, the mighty lord of the ancient gods, points the ship of state into sensitive Pisces, the emotional, charming and often psychic tail-end of the zodiac. Pisces marks your twelfth house of secrets, sorrows and sub-conscious motivation, but fortunate Jupiter, the greater benefic, brings some advantage wherever he sails, even through the twelfth house of secrets, sorrows and subconscious motivation. Benefit comes for the Ram through fraternal or charitable institutions, connection with government departments, large corporations, hospitals, universities, prisons and the like. If you have the money, why not donate to institutions that aid the poor and needy? Even if you don't have much cash, you will be inclined to give of your time and energy to help the maimed, sick and otherwise unfortunate.

The focus in 2010 turns to behind-the-scenes or otherwise solitary activities, even mystical or astrological studies. Any benefits or gains may be hidden, or at least not as obvious to others as might normally be the case, but you definitely need to pay attention to your spiritual development, issues connected with institutions, partner's health and concealed matters in general. Anything connected with the ocean may also attract you, either as a fascinating field of study or as a satisfying hobby. Avoid gambling and extravagance — though if you are in the entertainment business, you should do well.

Between June 6 and September 9, 2010, Jupiter mounts the ramparts of your own sign, Aries, for a three month stint. This bolsters your confidence and gives you the feeling that everything has taken a turn for the better, as you busy yourself with travel plans, educational and self-improvement projects and a generally improved sense of wellbeing. Jupiter turns retrograde in Aries on July 23, slips back to Pisces on September 9 and turns direct in Pisces on November 18. The week either side of this date is ideal for focusing yourself and implementing plans for the year ahead. Jupiter remains in Pisces until 22nd January, 2011, when he moves into Aries again for another 6 month stint. Check out your year ahead in 2010!

Taurus, the Bull Taurus, the Bull Go to Top

Now that Jupiter is cruising through your eleventh house of friends, you'll feel so much more you. Set your sights high because at last you can realise your dreams and aspirations, make money from career-related activities and have serious fun with other people's children in your life. The income you gain from your career should expand and you can expect some financial assistance from friends and associates. Be content with what the world sends you, but if you owe friends money, make the effort to repay it. Watch out for bloodsuckers who, though incompetent themselves, may become envious and secretly work to bring you down. Matters connected with clubs or associations will pay dividends through positive action over the coming months, so join in and work towards the common goal.

On June 6, Jupiter moves forward for a brief stay in Aries, your twelfth house of secrets, sorrows, and issues buried behind-the-scenes. Any benefits or gains may be hidden, or at least not obvious to others, but this is an ideal time to pay attention to your spiritual development, issues connected with institutions, partner's health and concealed matters in general.

Gemini, the Twins Gemini, the Twins Go to Top

As mighty Jupiter rolls into your mid-heaven, good fortune is heading your way in 2010. Your career and public image are in the spotlight and there's plenty of dumb luck about, so get your act together, Twins, and shoot for the stars! You'll shine like a comet, attracting the attention of prominent people who will be happy to boost your prospects, whether in the church, state, law or public affairs. You may even make a bundle through good luck rather than good judgement, and if you are so inclined can feature in the stock exchange, banking, shipping, trade, or trusts concerned with the public wellbeing. Keep a tight ship, as any misbehaviour on your part will be sure to show up in the cosmic glare.

On June 6, Jupiter moves forward for a brief stay in Aries, your eleventh house of friends, hopes and wishes. The income you gain from your career should expand and you can expect some financial assistance from friends and associates. Jupiter turns retrograde in Aries on July 23, slips back to Pisces on September 9 and turns direct in Pisces on November 18. The week either side of this date is ideal for focusing yourself and implementing plans for the year ahead. Jupiter remains in Pisces until 22nd January, 2011, when he moves into Aries again for another 6 month visit. Check out your year ahead in 2010!

Cancer, the Crab Cancer, the Crab Go to Top

It's a fabulous year ahead for the Crab! Get to work and plan that vacation and make your decision about any cultural, religious, or educational concerns that may appeal to you. This year stimulates a more optimistic, light-hearted approach and awakens your generous side. Religious or spiritual awakening is more than possible too, as the coming year has much potential for success and personal growth, especially thanks to decisions you take now. You'll be keen to travel and overseas contacts will feature strongly in your life.

A second marriage, or anything to do with in-laws and your partner's relations can be satisfactorily organized now. However, you should not overdo things in the thrill of your enthusiasm. Stay out of the law courts if you can.

On June 6, Jupiter moves forward for a brief transit through the early part of Aries, your mid-heaven, the house of career and public image. This brings a three-month phase of remarkable good fortune, and of aid from important people. Jupiter turns retrograde in Aries on July 23, slips back to Pisces on September 9 and turns direct in Pisces on November 18. The week either side of this date is ideal for focusing yourself and implementing plans for the year ahead. Jupiter remains in Pisces until 22nd January, 2011, when he moves into Aries again for another 6 month stay. Check out your year ahead in 2010!

Leo, the Lion Leo, the Lion Go to Top

This year brings some financial gain for the Lion through marriage and partnerships, but move with caution if taking on loans, mortgages or other forms of debt. Jupiter in the sign of the sensitive Fish gives lenders the advantage. Your sexuality is likely to take a deeper form of expression than usual. Don't be surprised if you feel drawn to the occult and other hidden subjects related to the mysteries of life. Joint income, investments, collection of debts, taxes, insurance, inheritance and the settlement of estate matters are all areas that feature in the year to come.

June 6 brings Jupiter forward into Aries, the fiery, creative home of the Ram. This awakens a desire to travel, to see the world and to broaden your spiritual, emotional and physical horizons. Dealings with foreigners and faraway places may lead to marriage, or a second marriage, for eligible Lions.

Virgo, the Virgin Virgo, the Virgin Go to Top

Jupiter sailing through your solar seventh house marks a year when you can form successful partnerships, alliances, or even tie the knot. Be sure to see and be seen, because the only way to take advantage of this potent energy is to get out and network. Court cases, legal decisions, partnership issues and any open conflicts are likely to be resolved in your favour.

Virgins of the female persuasion will be attracted to males who remind them of their fathers, but no matter what sex you are, partners and allies will bring stimulating experiences, broadening your store of knowledge and brightening your social life. Bear in mind, however, that those who come to you with grandiose ideas or the promise of some successful enterprise are unlikely to be able to deliver, no matter how well-intentioned they may be. Of course, this is not to say you have no choice in the matter. Keeping a conservative attitude will serve you well in the months ahead.

June 6 brings Jupiter forward into Aries, your eighth house of sex, death and taxes. Financial joint ventures will take your attention, yet you'll find time to investigate the hidden side of life. Debts at this time need to be paid, or collected as the case may be.

Libra, the Scales Libra, the Scales Go to Top

Jupiter's transit through the sign of the Fishes gives a much more favourable outlook for your health and for relationships with co-workers and associated professionals. It's a good time to streamline your working routines; relations with subordinates can also be improved, though you'll be happiest when working unsupervised. Your work and responsibilities expand in scope during the year ahead and you may need to take on assistants, but don't believe that you are invincible, as pride often comes before a fall. Your job may require more travel, or advanced training—and, although your efforts will be rewarded, don't take any aspect of it for granted.

A pet might enter your life, or perhaps you'll take more interest in small animals. Your interest in health and physical fitness may increase, but don't take your health too much for granted. Avoid procrastination and overeating.

June 6 brings Jupiter forward into devastatingly attractive Aries, your seventh house of marriage, partnership and open confrontation. Marriage is on the cards for many of you, or serious committed partnerships, some of which take shape now and others in the new year of 2011.

Scorpio, the Scorpion Scorpio, the Scorpion Go to Top

As Jupiter strides into delightful Pisces, a year of romance, pleasure and creative, egoboosting fun is in the wind. This transit improves your lovelife, presents investment opportunities and creates happier relations with children. A good thing all round, really! Speculative opportunities will present themselves, so money can be made, as this is a period of excellent potential, even though partners may behave somewhat erratically from time to time.

The watchword is forge ahead with confidence, but remember not to be over-confident, as Jupiter tends to excess. You will be inclined to take some judicious risks with gambling and speculative interests, but if you base these risks on a well-thought-through foundation, making use of your experience and expertise, you should do very well this year.

On June 6, Jupiter steps into Aries, the other Mars-ruled sign. This turns your attention to work and your working relationships, which are likely to expand, while bringing up the subject of your health and wellbeing. You may buy a pet or other small animal during this transit, or take on a new health regimen.

Sagittarius, the Archer Sagittarius, the Archer Go to Top

The year ahead marks the beginning of a twelve-year cycle of learning and new experiences for the Archer, as Pisces symbolises your solar fourth house, the house of beginnings and endings. Your life must take things to a new level, or relationships, employment and other forms of personal interaction will likely fall away. Jupiter's transit of Pisces brings comfortable, pleasant domestic relations and harmonious family surroundings. You will greatly expand your personal, professional, and intellectual horizons. It's just the time for real estate and home renovation, or perhaps selling up and relocating to the home of your dreams. You will feel the call of higher education or a particular study, receive advanced training, or take on long distance travel, writing, publishing, or promotion. Decisions you make now, especially those influenced by people you meet, will be catalysts for new ventures that affect the next twelve years of your life.

Mighty Jupiter, your life-ruler, rolls forward into Aries, your fifth house of romance, children and speculation on June 6, for a three-month stay. Ego-boosting romantic attractions wil appear, relationships with children will blossom, and you'll need to control the urge to blow it all on the ponies. It's a creative and enjoyable phase, a foretaste of the benefits of 2011.

Capricorn, the Sea-Goat Capricorn, the Sea-Goat Go to Top

New educational opportunities will arise for Capricorn in the coming year, with Jupiter moving through sociable Pisces. Your brothers, sisters, neighbours, and people in your local environment will take up more of your time and attention. Communications and travel will widen your circle of contacts, exchanging and sharing ideas and information. Success comes through developing your mechanical skills, through travel, or in promotional activities that improve your status. It's the right time to acquire telephones, computers, answering machines, or other communication devices. Creative writing, publishing, or educational interests are highly favoured in coming months.

June 6 sees Jupiter move into Aries, your fourth house of home, family, domestic conditions and fruits of the soil. This is the house of beginnings and endings, so prepare to take your life to a new level. The urge to embark upon a new direction begins to take shape over these few months, with the major changes probably needing to wait until early next year (2011) to take their final shape.

Aquarius, the Water Bearer Aquarius, the Water-Bearer Go to Top

You'll find that some of your cherished values and opinions will come under presssure, probably through the influence of philosophies or religions that are different to the ones you grew up with, Aquarius. Nevertheless, you'll do better this year through the proper allocation of your resources. At least you might lose some weight! Jupiter stimulates you to go for status to impress people, tempting you to spend on luxury items and status symbols. Your personal priorities and values are being redefined, but remember that under this influence money is the source of pleasure – which is fine if you can afford to spend it! How badly do you really need that new i-phone? Other expenditures concern higher education, political interests, religious or spiritual activities, travel, publishing and cultural pursuits.

On June 6, Jupiter moves forward for a brief stay in Aries, your third house of communication, siblings, local issues and education. You'll be running from pillar to post, chasing bargains and checking out the latest in computers, phones and gadgetry of all kinds. It's a Boy's Own period, really—not that girls will miss out on the gossip round. Jupiter turns retrograde in Aries on July 23, slips back to Pisces on September 9 and turns direct in Pisces on November 18. Jupiter remains in Pisces until 22nd January, 2011, when he moves into Aries again for another 6 month visit. Check out your year ahead in 2010!

Pisces, the Fishes Pisces, the Fishes Go to Top

Jupiter, your life-ruler, is a healing, optimistic and expansive influence, so in the months ahead a good deal of benefit comes your way, as Jupiter dives into the pool of the Fishes. Your own personal way of presenting yourself to the world comes under the spotlight, so it's the ideal time to push yourself forward and achieve your ambitions. Under this truly benefic phase, you can pursue pleasure, advancement and executive honours.

2010 is just the year to follow that urge to travel! Your health and physical appearance will improve as your individuality comes into focus. Others will see that you are more outgoing and optimistic about the future. You'll find enjoyment and pleasure just about everywhere! Don't hesitate to put your plans into action, as you will naturally attract attention and will exude confidence. Travel for pleasure, higher education or spiritual development is favoured, as people from distant parts or other religions and cultures to your own come into the picture. Interacting with them at all levels will be fun and pleasurable, so relax and enjoy the experience. Jupiter is expansive, but let's hope your expansion will not be mainly in the waistline! Resist the temptation to overindulge, especially in food, drink and the pursuit of excitement, gambling and speculation. Overconfidence will be the big trap.

On June 6, Jupiter jets into Aries, your second house of personal finances and values. Spending will be up on luxuries and you will be brought face to face with some of your most cherished views on life, the universe and everything. Good thing Jupiter turns retrograde in Aries on July 23, slipping back to Pisces on September 9 and turning direct in Pisces on November 18. The week either side of this date is ideal for focusing yourself and implementing plans for the year ahead. Jupiter remains in Pisces until 22nd January, 2011, when he moves into Aries again for another 6 month visit. Check out your year ahead in 2010!
